We have just finished ‘The Sermon on the Mount’ in Matthew 5-7 and now come to a new section. Mt 4:23 gives us outline of this part of Matthew: And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. So Jesus’ ministry was 1st “teaching/preaching” (which we saw in Mt 5-7); now we should expect the 2nd part: “healing”. This is exactly what Matthew does; if you were to read Mark & Luke’s version of today’s text, you would see this is paralleled there but in different order; in fact, some of these healings may have happened before the sermon in Matthew 5-7 (I believe they did). Matthew is not really trying to tell exact chronology as much as grouping his book by theme. Therefore, our next few sermons will see other parts to Jesus’ ministry besides just teaching; and we will see that his ministry reveals the power of God.
